What is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea, a bacterial infection (which is sexually transmitted), is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoea. Similar to chlamydia, it is present in both women and in men.

Gonorrhoea might present with, among others:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Fever
  • Pain on urination
  • Discharge

Untreated gonorrhoea can produce reproductive problems: in women, sterilization, and in men, a swollen penis and testicles. Both men and women can also develop arthritis and skin problems. Your IPSA Medical clinic offers a confidential consultation, if you have ever had sexual intercourse without using any protection.

At IPSA Medical, we recommend being tested before starting out on any new sexual relationships. If you are thinking of having a family, then you can also get a complete sexual health screen. During your IPSA Medical consultation, your medical history and risk profile will be evaluated, with suggestions given for the most suitable sexual health screening for you.

If it is suspected that you have a sexually transmitted infection (STI), then your IPSA Medical doctor might start you on antibiotics (before your results are returned). Once your results come back to the clinic, they will be explained to you. Any further steps – if necessary – will be recommended. The entire process is completely confidential. You will have the full support of your IPSA Medical doctor.
